Just before Christmas, we visited the Big Island. We stayed in the Goose Country Volcano Cottage about 40 miles from Hilo International. The park was amazing, and I would definitely recommend visiting if you’re into parks and hiking and geology.
For me, it was more like a scientific field trip than a vacation, since my three travel companions are all geologists. Every trail and museum and scenic view was spent analyzing rocks and lava flows and tubes and steam vents. I definitely learned a lot and would go back in an instant. It really was nice to get away from the city for a while and just hang out in a great cottage with great people and God’s amazing creation all around us.
Goose Country will give any UH geology affiliates a discounted stay in her cottages. Highly recommend.
